Today Best Buy released its fiscal year 2017 Corporate Responsibility & Sustainability Report. What’s the big news? We set out to reduce our carbon emissions 45 percent by 2020 (over a 2009 baseline) and, at the end of 2016, we reached nearly 47 percent.

We are committed to addressing climate change. But that’s not all.

At Best Buy, we are focusing our efforts to positively impact the world in three areas: our communities, our environment and our people. It’s the work we call Best Buy for Good.

For the second year in a row, Best Buy has been recognized by Office Depot for leadership in green purchasing for our goods not for resale – or products we use to run our business – think office supplies, furniture and cleaning solutions. Best Buy is the only retailer to receive this distinguished award.

Award winners were selected from Office Depot’s largest 1,000 customers based on how much these customers invest in sustainable products. Office Depot calls this “green spend,” a calculation based on products that save energy, avoid waste or use safer chemicals.

18 Nov: Best Buy’s Commitment To Carbon Reduction

A year ago, I participated in the COP 21 Climate Negotiations in Paris. It was a historic moment as nearly 200 countries came together to agree to take important steps to address climate change by reducing global temperatures through the reduction of carbon emissions and other measures.

Now, as COP22 convenes in Marrakesh, Morocco, world leaders are again discussing action items to ensure that the agreed-upon measures come to fruition. We believe that it is important for Best Buy to remain engaged with leading companies and the rest of the world in a commitment to aggressive, science-based carbon reduction.

06 Oct: You’re Sustainable, but Are Your Roommates?

So you’re living in your first apartment. Freedom! But you’re also paying the bills now. And let’s be honest, you’d rather spend your money on a night out than on your electric bill, right?

October is Energy Awareness Month, so we’re sharing a few easy ways to save energy and money in your first place:

  • Ask your landlord to change overhead lights to LED – they are energy efficient and last a long time.
  • While you’re talking to your landlord, ask them to install a smart thermostat.

08 Mar: It’s Getting Hot in Here: How Rising Temperatures Affect Best Buy

February was hot, hot, hot. In fact, it was the hottest recorded month in history, according to newly released data. That news follows NASA’s announcement that 2015 was the hottest year ever.

Why does this matter to Best Buy? To start, rising temps lead to rising energy costs. And as temperatures rise, there’s more extreme weather, such as floods, droughts and hurricanes. These events affect our employees, customers and the environment. In 2015, extreme weather impacted nearly half of our locations – forcing closures and, in some cases, damaging merchandise.
