Omar Yusuf applied for a seasonal job in computers at Best Buy two years ago, never thinking it would turn into a career.
“When I started, it was around November, so I just got thrown into the frenzy,” Omar said. “I was in checkouts, and it felt like a rush. It’s really fun, actually.”
Now, Omar is a full-time expert of all things smart home at Best Buy’s store in Maplewood, Minnesota.
His story is fairly common at Best Buy. People come in for a part-time gig or to earn extra spending money, and they end up staying and building a career. In fact, more than 30 percent of full-time Best Buy employees started as temporary workers before moving into permanent roles.
Omar credits his leaders for his success, but Nicolette Kluck, the store general manager, knew he was a hard worker from Day One.
“When Omar was a seasonal employee, he wasn’t afraid to ask questions,” she said. “He put his own spin on his work and became successful.”
Omar says everyone should have at least one experience working in retail.
“You can see what real people are like in everyday scenarios, and that helps you build yourself as a person,” he said, “And at Best Buy, you get to mess around with technology all day, and who doesn’t love that?”
Hiring for holidays
If you’re looking for seasonal employment, or perhaps an experience like Omar’s, check Best Buy’s Holiday Hiring Fair. It’s a national event on Oct. 10 and 11 in which all U.S. Best Buy stores will hold interviews from noon to 7 p.m. local time.
You can apply in person or online. Interviews will take place the same day with potential on-the-spot job offers. Walk-ins are welcome, or you can reserve an interview spot. In addition to a fun environment, Best Buy also offers a flexible schedule, competitive wages, 401k eligibility and an employee discount.
We’re also looking for workers at our distribution centers. Hiring fairs for warehouse positions will be held Oct. 10 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time at the following locations:
