28 Dec: 5 Things To Know About Using Those Holiday Gift Cards

Gift card burning a hole in your pocket?

Chances are, you probably received a piece of the $26 billion in gift cards given out this holiday season.

Gift cards for consumer electronics were among the most popular gifts this year. The cards are desirable because they’re convenient and let recipients get the things they really want.

But people don’t always take full advantage of them. An estimated $45 billion in gift cards has gone unredeemed since 2005, according to CardHub.

Here are a few tips for making sure you get the most out of your gift cards:

26 Dec: Christmas Is Over, But The Deals Are Still Going at Best Buy

For some of us, post-holiday shopping can be stressful. But for many others, it’s all just part of the plan.

Forty percent of Americans — including 51 percent of parents and 75 percent of people between 18 and 34 — postpone gift giving for themselves and others until after the holidays to cash in on deals, according to a new survey from Best Buy1.

Their to-do lists include everything from shopping deals and redeeming gift cards to grabbing accessories for newly acquired tech gifts.

23 Dec: Best Buy Gift Cards Through The Years

As one of the first retailers to offer shoppers plastic gifts cards 20 years ago, Best Buy led one of the hottest trends in gift-giving.

Back then, our wallet-sized plastic cards replaced cumbersome paper gift certificates.

It took a while for shoppers to embrace the concept of gift cards, but today they’re one of the most popular items for gift-givers and gift-receivers. In fact, the National Retail Federation expected total spending on the cards to reach $25.9 billion in 2015.

17 Dec: Still Looking For The Perfect Gift? You’re Not Alone

Seventy-five percent of Americans say that just because they started their holiday shopping early doesn’t mean they’ll finish early, according to a new national study1 commissioned by Best Buy.

These last-minute shoppers pull out all the stops to get gifts in time for the holidays, including shopping online at work (24 percent), staying up all night (17 percent) and shopping on the way to a holiday event (13 percent).

As they consider their final shopping lists, 67 percent of Americans believe tech gadgets are easier to shop for than clothing as a last-minute holiday present.

10 Dec: Treat Yourself: ‘Self-Gifting’ is a Popular Holiday Trend

They say it’s better to give than to receive — but why choose?

More and more Americans are indulging in “self-gifting” at the holidays, checking something off their own wish lists while out shopping for loved ones.

A recent survey commissioned by Best Buy found that nearly 85 percent of shoppers take advantage of sales or price discounts during the holiday season to buy gifts for themselves (or a group gift for themselves and their households). That figure is even higher, nearly 90 percent, for shoppers ages 18 to 34.

09 Dec: How to Defend Doorstep Deliveries from Holiday Grinches

You ordered something online, but you’re not going to be home when it’s delivered. What do you do?

Free holiday shipping is a great perk for shoppers this time of year but, sadly, there are Grinches out there who will steal packages from doorsteps.

Fortunately, there are many options to protect your packages.

  • For starters, sign up for delivery-tracking notifications. That way you’ll know when you need to be home to get your package.
  • If you’re expecting something delivered by UPS, you can go online and designate whether a delivery person can or cannot leave a package without getting your signature.
