Best Buy is committed to helping kids reach their full potential. Our community efforts extend all the way to Shanghai, China, where I work on Best Buy’s private label sourcing team.
We wanted to help our local community and address an issue that we are very passionate about – the environment. Together with Dr. Jane Goodall’s nonprofit, Shanghai Roots & Shoots, we created an environmental education program, called Youth for Environmental Sustainability (YES).
The environment is a critical issue in China, as we have seen pollution increase significantly over the years. My team feels strongly that our younger generation needs to learn good environmental habits and to learn to be responsible for themselves and for society. Through the YES program, we are making a difference. Over the past two years, my fellow Best Buy YES volunteers and I taught 70 classes to more than 200 students.
The students we work with enjoy the classes so much because we keep them fun and interactive. A few favorite activities include making recycled paper and designing reusable bags.
The Best Buy team in Shanghai plans to continue to focus on teaching environmental awareness and is planning a second session of classes. We look forward to making broader and deeper impacts on our community and making a positive impact on our world.
