But before you take to the skies, you may also need to register with the FAA – a federal requirement, even for recreational use – and it’s super easy.
What needs to be registered?
You. If you plan to fly a drone that weighs 0.55 pounds or more, you have a couple of things to do before you take off. (If a drone operator is under 13 years of age, then a parent/guardian needs to register for him or her.)
Visit www.faa.gov/uas/registration, and under “Top Tasks” (on the right side), click “Register Your UAS” and follow the prompts.

How long is registration valid?
Three years.
What happens if an operator doesn’t register?
You will be subject to civil and criminal penalties if you meet the criteria to register an unmanned aircraft and do not register. State and local laws might vary, so check with your local jurisdiction on additional requirements or restrictions.
