This is a critical time for climate action, and Best Buy is doing our part to save our planet and create a more sustainable world for our employees and the communities we serve.
That’s why we’re proud to become a founding member of the Breakthroughs 2030: Retail campaign, a Race to Zero initiative that aims to accelerate climate action within the retail industry.
We’re partnering with other companies to encourage retailers and retail associations to accelerate climate action in the industry. The other founding members include H&M Group, Ingka Group (IKEA), Kingfisher and Walmart.
Best Buy’s participation builds on our existing efforts to reduce our carbon footprint. We’ve reduced emissions 61% since 2009 and have pledged to be carbon neutral by 2040.
“At a time when the climate crisis might seem too big to solve, we are proud to be a founding member of the Race to Zero retail campaign,” Best Buy CEO Corie Barry said. “Together, we will be able to make a meaningful and positive impact on the planet by joining forces and collectively rethinking how we do business.”
As part of the campaign, the Race to Zero Retail Accelerator Pledge was launched at COP26, the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, Scotland. The pledge encourages global, regional and national retail trade associations to bring their members together to take climate action.
Retailers can join the Race to Zero effort by setting science-based targets, working to halve greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and committing to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
On the path to carbon neutrality
For decades, sustainability has been at the core of what we do because our customers and employees expect it, and the planet demands it. We signed the Climate Pledge in September 2020, which includes a commitment to be carbon neutral across our business by 2040, a decade faster than our previous goal of 2050.
We’ve also set a goal to help our customers reduce their own carbon emissions 20% by 2030 through the use of ENERGY STAR certified products. Since making the commitment, we’ve helped customers remove the equivalent of 3 million cars off the roads for an entire year.
