Reducing carbon emissions
While the issue of climate change is worldwide, the impact is felt by people in the communities where we live and work in the form of severe weather, rising temperatures, flooding and water shortages. We recognize that meaningful climate action is a collaborative effort and leading companies must come together to solve this difficult challenge.
In 2019, we set a goal to reduce carbon emissions by 75% by 2030 (over a 2009 baseline) and to become carbon neutral by 2040. These goals adhere to Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) requirements, meaning our reduction is in line with the reduction required to keep the global temperature increase below 2°C as outlined in the Fifth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
To make progress against our carbon reduction goals, we make investments in energy-efficient equipment and look for additional ways to improve our energy management processes. We then prioritize renewable energy sources for the remainder of our energy consumption.
Reducing water usage
Best Buy is committed to reducing our water usage in our operations and in the products we sell.
We rely on healthy watersheds in the regions where we operate, and many of the products we sell, like washing machines and dishwashers, are dependent on water.
In 2019, we committed to reducing enterprise water usage by 15% by 2025.
By taking steps to reduce our water consumption and helping our customers to do the same, especially in water-scarce regions, we aim to make this resource more abundant and readily available to the communities we serve.
Reducing waste
Best Buy is committed to reducing waste in our operations.
We are committed to achieving 85% waste diversion across our U.S. operations.
In 2023, we committed to achieving TRUE (Total Resource Use and Efficiency) certification for zero waste for all supply chain locations by 2025.
TRUE certification helps facilities achieve zero waste goals, which increases resource efficiency, reduces carbon emissions, and supports public health. Facilities achieve certification by meeting rigorous program requirements administered by Green Business Certification Inc.
To help achieve TRUE certification, we continue to invest in equipment that helps drive recycling, we invest in employee engagement that drives zero waste culture, and we continuously look for new opportunities to reduce waste.
