Waste reduction is an important part of our environmental efforts to conserve resources and promote sustainable operations across all our business. We are proud to share that Best Buy has achieved its 2021 goal of certifying all 29 supply chain facilities as zero waste.

TRUE (Total Resource Use and Efficiency) is a designation from Green Business Certification Inc., the organization behind the widely used LEED green building rating system. The TRUE program helps organizations define, pursue and achieve zero-waste goals. All of our facilities meet certification standards by diverting more than 90% of their waste from landfills.

“We are proud of this milestone and the progress we’ve made in driving forward the circular economy through our zero waste goals,” said Tim Dunn, head of environmental sustainability at Best Buy. “This achievement reaffirms our dedication not only to minimize our environmental impact but also improve our efficiency for the long-term success of the company.”

Our journey to zero waste

The path to certifying all 29 supply chain facilities began in 2021, when our Chino, Calif., facility became the first Best Buy location to achieve TRUE certification for zero waste.

From optimizing packaging to expanding recycling programs, our supply chain facilities have implemented innovative practices to minimize waste and maximize resource efficiency. Cardboard and plastic film account for the largest volume of materials we collect and divert from landfills, but our efforts extend even further.

Here are more ways our facilities are reducing waste:

  • Reusable Pallets: To minimize waste across our enterprise, we reuse pallets and totes to support the circular economy and reduce our environmental impact.
  • Labeled Bins: Each facility has implemented color-coded waste, recycling and compost bins to make it easy to identify how to properly get rid of materials. This makes it easier for employees to sort waste correctly and helps divert waste from landfills.
  • Green Teams: Employee engagement is a key component of our waste reduction strategy. Our employee volunteers run Green Teams in each facility to help support our waste diversion goal and educate and train their colleagues to ultimately drive a zero waste culture.
  • Condensed Styrofoam: Throughout our supply chain, foam materials like Styrofoam are broken down and condensed to cubes through a densifier to increase truck capacity and make shipping more efficient. The material is then shipped to our partners who repurpose it into new packaging, building materials and a variety of other products such as picture frames.
