01 Nov: Secret to Magnolia designer’s success: Focusing on ‘little things’

For a couple of minutes, Doman Soohoo couldn’t come to the phone to discuss his remarkable 30-year career at Magnolia and Best Buy. He was talking to a customer.

But what set this customer interaction apart from most was the reason they were talking.

“He just came in to say hi, not necessarily to buy something,” Doman said. “I’ve worked with him over the years. A lot of customers will do that.”

Doman’s customers at the Northgate Seattle store not only stop in to say hi, they invite him to their homes.

25 Oct: Diwali: A festival of lights and community

When Divya Maiya, a Best Buy product manager, moved to the United States nine years ago from India, she thought she would have to say goodbye to traditions. Traditions like Diwali, a festival of lights that celebrates the victory of good over evil.

To her great surprise, she learned that Best Buy not only encourages employees to celebrate the holiday, it hosts a large celebration at its corporate office. Last year’s event drew 400 people.

“I couldn’t even adapt to it for the first year.

03 Oct: A customer in need receives Minnesota employee’s kind deed

If a picture is worth a thousand words, a memory card packed with pictures is priceless. Just ask Anne Taylor.

She flew to Minneapolis on a special mission to photograph her niece’s senior pictures. When Anne landed, she knew she’d need to buy a memory card for her DSLR camera. But what she didn’t expect to capture was the selfless kindness of a Best Buy employee.

Finding the specific memory card Anne needed proved to be easier said than done. The Richfield, Minnesota, store located just down the road from the airport was sold out of the card at the time, and so were the nearest Best Buy stores.

30 Sep: Best Buy helps employees grow their families with adoption, surrogacy benefits

The nursery that Keegan Shoutz and his husband, Paul Schroepfer, decorated sat empty for a year.

They had a crib, a changing table and a rocking chair — but no baby. Still, they were hopeful that the adoption journey they began in 2016 would lead them to the family they desperately wanted.

“I had a ton of great memories from my childhood, like camping and horseback riding. I just really wanted to create a new set of memories like this with my own family,” Paul said.

27 Sep: Massachusetts employee shaves head to raise money for kids with cancer

At first, Daniel Guilmain Jr. began growing his hair out just because he wanted to.

Then he learned about a charity that raised money and support for kids with cancer. Participants shave their heads, as a sign of solidarity with the children, and ask people to contribute money for doing so.

Daniel had relatives who lost their lives to cancer, so the cause resonated with him.

Over the course of 10 months, he grew his hair out more than 5 inches.

“The Teen Tech Center gave me all of the design tools, like Photoshop and Illustrator, which sparked my interest in design,” he said.

17 Sep: Best Buy Community Grants bring career possibilities into focus

When Lesly Tobon first looked down the lens of a professional camera, something within her clicked. She began to get curious about the things on the other side of the lens, a fascination that developed into a college major and career aspirations she might not otherwise have imagined.

Because of the dedication of nonprofit organizations like The Friends of EXPO Center — where Lesly first got to test out camera technology — and the financial support of Best Buy Community Grants, she and thousands of students like her get to open doors that help them see what’s possible.

12 Sep: Detroit teens build community through technology

DETROIT — Earlier this summer, a group of teens fanned out across southwest Detroit with an assignment: Make a video that celebrates their neighborhood using every letter from A to Z.

So, they split up and illustrated landmarks by letter. For instance, C is for Clark Park. Then they took photos and video, learned how to do voice-overs and recorded them at the Best Buy Teen Tech Center. They’ll edit and aim to complete the video this fall.

“Once you get them going, they’ll learn and teach me,” said Francisco “Cisco” Tinoco, the center’s coordinator and ABC project assigner.

11 Sep: Employee finds Best Buy the perfect place to prep for law school

There are a lot of things that can be gleaned from a fast-paced, dynamic retail environment. For Najeebah Hussain, working at Best Buy during her gap year between college and law school helped prepare her for her next chapter in some unexpectedly valuable ways.

In addition to studying for the LSAT and applying to schools, Najeebah’s role as a computer sales consultant at the Best Buy store in Columbia, Missouri, helped strengthened the skillset she’d need as she pursued a career in law.
