08 Mar: Best Buy makes Barron’s 100 Most Sustainable Companies list for 6th time

Best Buy is proud to be named as one of Barron’s 100 Most Sustainable U.S. Companies for the sixth year in a row.   

This year, we’re the top-ranked retailer, coming in at No. 7. We’ve ranked in the Top 10 since the list came out in 2018.

Barron’s looks at the 1,000 largest publicly held companies in the U.S. and ranks them on more than 230 performance indicators. This includes workplace diversity, carbon reduction, how companies performed for key stakeholders, community engagement and more.

Best Buy is proud to be named to CDP’s prestigious Climate A List for the sixth consecutive year for our bold actions to take care of our communities and the planet.

We have been recognized as a leader by CDP as a result of our efforts tackling climate change and accelerating our environmental goals. This year’s recognition is based on our actions to cut emissions, mitigate climate risks and drive a low-carbon economy.

15 Sep: Best Buy launches protective cases with sustainable packaging for new iPhone 14 lineup

Our sustainability journey has pushed us to continually find new ways to innovate within our operations and beyond. That includes making Best Buy’s exclusive brand products and the packaging they come in more sustainable. 

We’re launching an expansive line of protective cases for the new iPhone 14 lineup, and there’s something special about the packaging they come in: it’s being made with sustainably sourced paper that is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®). The phone cases are the largest lineup yet of Best Buy exclusive brand products to get the eco-friendly packaging.

14 Sep: Best Buy’s Hugh Cherne makes sustainability a lifestyle

Over 50 years ago, on April 22, 1970, the first celebration of Earth Day took place. More than 20 million Americans gathered to celebrate a day that would mark the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement.  

Hugh Cherne was in the crowd that day, and at the time didn’t know the profound impact it would have on his future career or that it would lead him to Best Buy. Now the company’s associate director of sustainability, the day lives on in Hugh’s memory as one that helped shape him into who he is today.

28 Apr: Best Buy earns first TRUE certification for zero waste

We have long been committed to making a positive impact on the planet and the communities we serve, and that journey has pushed us to continually find new ways to make our business even more sustainable.

Today, we’re proud to announce that our Reverse Logistics Center in Chino, California, has earned Best Buy’s first TRUE certification for zero waste. Over the last year, the supply chain facility was able to divert more than 99.67% of its solid waste from landfills.

TRUE (Total Resource Use and Efficiency) certification helps facilities define, pursue and achieve zero waste goals, which increases their resource efficiency, cuts their carbon footprint, and supports public health.

20 Apr: Best Buy Named ENERGY STAR Partner Of The Year For 8th Year In A Row

For the eighth consecutive year, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has named Best Buy as an ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year.

We’ve also received the distinction of Sustained Excellence for being awarded Partner of the Year for more than two straight years. The Sustained Excellence award is the highest honor from the ENERGY STAR program.

We are proud of this recognition and the work we do every day to help our customers save energy. That includes our commitment to help our customers reduce their own carbon emissions 20% by 2030 through the use of ENERGY STAR certified products, saving more than $5 billion on their energy bills.

16 Nov: Best Buy Celebrates Decade on Dow Jones Sustainability Index

Best Buy has been named to the prestigious Dow Jones Sustainability Index for the 10th consecutive year.

Only five U.S. retailers were included on this year’s index, which identifies leaders in environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance.

The Dow Jones Sustainability Index serves as an important bench-marking tool for investors who incorporate sustainability performance into their portfolios. It analyzes a variety of criteria, including carbon reduction, human rights and corporate governance.

Being included on the index reflects our broader approach to corporate responsibility and sustainability.

30 Oct: Best Buy Ranks No. 12 on Best ESG Companies List

We take great pride in how we treat our employees, our planet and the communities we serve — and that’s only become more important to us during the COVID-19 pandemic.

That’s why we’re honored to rank No. 12 on Investor’s Business Daily’s 2020 Best ESG Companies list, which recognizes the top 50 businesses that are “doing well for humankind and the environment, but also doing right for investors.” We’re this year’s top-ranked retailer.  

The pandemic has magnified the importance of environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices.

22 Jun: Best Buy Unveils South Carolina Solar Field

Best Buy has cut our carbon footprint in half since 2009, and now we’re making our biggest commitment yet to renewable energy.

In collaboration with solar developer X-Elio and U.S. Bank, we are proud to unveil the Best Buy Solar Field in Martin, South Carolina. This project will produce 174,000 megawatt hours of clean electricity per year for the local power grid — enough to power the equivalent of 260 Best Buy stores for an entire year.

The Best Buy Solar Field underscores our commitment to enriching lives through technology.
