For many years, the purchasing power and business ownership of Black Americans has increased while, at the same time, there has also been a movement to support Black businesses across the country. This effort has come to be known as Blackout Day and, this year, Best Buy joins many others in offering our support. That’s the encouraging news.

The unfortunate news is that as we looked to highlight the Black-owned businesses that we purchased consumer electronics or accessories from, we realized just how short that list is.

Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States on June 19, 1865 — nearly 2 ½ years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It has long been a meaningful holiday for Black Americans, yet its awareness has remained relatively low among the broader population.

That’s why Quest decided to bring the celebration to his colleagues at Best Buy’s Seattle Technology Office last year.

“Dreamers play an important role in our everyday lives as coworkers, business owners, friends and neighbors. As a kid, I remember thumbing through the printed TV listings that came with the Sunday paper to see what I didn’t want to miss that week. Back then, everything was appointment viewing — there was no DVR or on-demand.

When Best Buy leaders in Pittsburgh learned that a 13-year-old boy with cancer wanted to do a shopping spree at a local store, they were determined to make it happen — even if he couldn’t step inside.

Tony was diagnosed with neurofibromatosis at just 9 months old. He has since been on multiple experimental treatments, and he recently learned that he has a large cancerous tumor in his abdomen that requires chemotherapy and radiation.

Jamie’s Dream Team, a local nonprofit that helps fulfill dreams of individuals facing severe life difficulties, was hoping to fulfill Tony’s wish to go to an amusement park and a pro basketball game.
