Best Buy is proud to rank No. 1 on Barron’s prestigious list of 100 Most Sustainable Companies for the second time.
We previously achieved this honor in 2019 and have now placed in the top five for four straight years. We ranked No. 5 last year.
This recognizes our company’s leadership across a comprehensive range of areas, from workplace diversity to carbon reduction. We aim to be a good corporate citizen in our interactions with all stakeholders, including employees, customers, vendors, our communities and the environment.
As part of its research, Barron’s also ranked Best Buy as the top-performing company in regards to our COVID-19 response.
How Barron’s created its list
Barron’s teamed with Calvert Research and Management, a prominent responsible investing firm, to produce the ranking. They began with the 1,000 largest publicly held companies in the U.S. The list applied and weighted more than 230 performance indicators for each company on topics that included greenhouse gas emissions, workplace safety, workplace diversity, community engagement, business ethics and more.
These performance indicators were then applied to five key stakeholder categories: shareholders, employees, customers, community, and planet. Companies with strong scores across stakeholder groups made the list.
How we made the list
Since the onset of the pandemic last year, Best Buy has remained focused on keeping employees and customers safe while continuing to serve our customers’ essential needs and ensuring our business continues to thrive amid rapidly evolving conditions.
Here are some of the ways we continue to support our stakeholders:
- We aim to foster an inclusive and diverse work environment and have set major commitments for recruiting, hiring and retaining employees of color and women.
- We launched contactless curbside pickup as a way for customers to safely get the tech they need to work, learn, cook, entertain and connect during the pandemic.
- We have invested in enhanced benefits that address our employees’ total well-being (physical, mental, financial and social).
- In partnership with the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation, we distributed $13 million in assistance to employees through hardship relief funds.
- We are supporting communities with our network of Best Buy Teen Tech Centers, where teens from disinvested communities can learn tech skills and receive mentorship to succeed in today’s economy. We are on our way to 100 locations across the country.
- We are taking action to reduce carbon emissions in our operations and helping our customers do the same. We are embracing clean energy though investments in solar projects, and we have joined other leading companies in committing to be carbon neutral by 2040.
