Best Buy Focuses on Clean Energy with New Solar Project

For more than a decade, we’ve been focused on building a more sustainable world for the communities we serve, and today we’re announcing our biggest commitment yet to renewable energy.

In partnership with U.S. Bank and Longroad Energy, we’re proud to be part of the Little Bear Solar Project in Fresno County, California. It’s set to produce 480,000 megawatt hours of electricity annually for the local power grid, enough to power the equivalent of approximately 715 Best Buy stores.

“Sustainability is at the core of what we do, and we are proud to be making an investment that will have a positive impact on our communities and the environment,” said Tim Dunn, head of environmental sustainability at Best Buy. “We are committed to helping our planet by reducing our carbon emissions and doing what we can to address climate change.”

To help meet our ambitious sustainability goals, this year we also invested in the Best Buy Solar Field in Martin, South Carolina, which produces 174,000 megawatt hours of clean electricity annually for the local power grid. That’s equivalent to powering 260 Best Buy stores for an entire year.

Accelerating our sustainability goals

Since 2009, our carbon reduction efforts have cut our emissions by more than half, but we are committed to doing more and accelerating our progress. Earlier this year we signed The Climate Pledge, a commitment to be carbon neutral across our operations by 2040 — a decade faster than our previous goal of 2050.

To do our part to take care of the planet and help our customers do the same, we have launched several initiatives and continue to manage sustainability programs across the business. We have a Geekmobile fleet composed of hybrid vehicles, offer ENERGY STAR® certified products and operate the most comprehensive e-waste recycling collection program in U.S. retail.

Our work to address climate change has contributed to placing us in the top five on Barron’s list of the 100 Most Sustainable Companies in America for three straight years. We’ve also been recognized on the CDP Climate A List, where we ranked in the top tier of companies fighting climate change for the last three years.
