18 Sep: Best Buy Awards $2 Million to Local Tech-Ed Nonprofits

As students everywhere are getting back to school, we know that not all teens are receiving the tech education they will need to be successful in future careers.

To address this gap, the Best Buy Foundation, through our annual Community Grants Program, awarded more than $2 million to 414 nonprofit organizations across the country. The nonprofits we support provide teens from underserved communities opportunities to develop tech skills that will help them prepare for post-secondary education and careers.

Our field employees across the country were highly engaged in the grantmaking process, providing insights on the needs of their communities and making funding decisions.

20 Aug: Andre sees himself in teens he helps in Oakland

Andre Anthony Jr. can spot potential the moment it enters the room.

Sometimes it’s hidden, but he knows what to look for: a younger version of himself who’s dealing with the same struggles he did.

Andre, an Oakland native and Best Buy employee, found a way past those challenges. Now he’s helping students do the same every week at the Best Buy Teen Tech Center in Oakland, California, where he volunteers his time to help at-risk youth in the local community.

31 Jul: Teens get a voice in new Best Buy awareness campaign

Martaize “Tez” Smith woke up early in the morning to practice his lines before the film crew arrived at his home in north Minneapolis.

The 15-year-old high school student is an aspiring filmmaker, but that day he was going to be on the other side of the camera. “I was a little nervous,” he said. “That was something I’ve never done before, but I’m a performer. That’s me. That’s who I am.”

Tez is one of three teens who star in a series of new digital videos that highlight the youth served by Best Buy’s Teen Tech Centers, which provide teens from underserved communities around the U.S.

05 Mar: Best Buy Announces 2018 National Grant Recipients

Best Buy recently set a lofty goal: to prepare 1 million teens from underserved communities for tech-reliant jobs each year by 2020.

We know this work is key, not only to help solve a skills gap, but to build a diverse talent pipeline for Best Buy and our partner companies. However, we can’t accomplish it alone. That’s why we’re partnering with nonprofits focused on tech education who can help us make a greater collective impact.

This year, we are investing nearly $1.5 million in our National Grants Program, funding nine strategic partners who provide curriculum and programming for our new Career Pathways program.

09 Feb: Best Buy Investing in Houston’s Post-Hurricane Recovery

About 150 8th grade students at Fleming Middle School in Houston got hands-on and learned how to build their own computers on Friday – with the help of dozens of Best Buy volunteers. It was the latest, but certainly not the last, example of Best Buy’s investment in Houston schools, nonprofits and surrounding community.

Best Buy employs thousands of technically skilled employees in the greater Houston area. Many of them were affected by Hurricane Harvey last August. While we addressed our employees’ immediate needs, we also knew the path to full recovery for them and for the Houston community would be a long one.

03 Jan: St. Jude Treatments Turn Employee’s Grim Diagnosis into Bright Future

You can sum up Jeremy Finney’s approach to fighting cancer with this visual: At 16 years old, he rode his bike 8 miles each way to and from radiation treatments.

That’s grit.

He showed no symptoms of cancer until he woke up one morning with a grapefruit-sized tumor in his neck. As a swimmer, football player and cyclist, getting aggressive treatment for Stage 4 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma was the last activity Jeremy planned to squeeze into his busy schedule. But the next day he had his first of several surgeries and started treatment.
