02 Jun: Applications for Best Buy Community Grants Are Now Being Accepted

It’s critical for teens to develop tech skills that will set them up for future career success. That’s why, once a year, the Best Buy Foundation provides grants to local nonprofits, schools and libraries to support hands-on, experiential tech education programs for underserved teens in communities where we do business.

Well, that time of year is here. We’re now accepting applications for Best Buy Community Grants.

If you’re an organization that has a proven track record of helping underserved teens gain 21st-century tech skills during out-of-school hours, now is the time to apply.

01 Jun: Hoverboards Are Rolling Into Best Buy Stores

For the first time, hoverboards – or “self-balancing scooters” – are coming to U.S. Best Buy stores and BestBuy.com.

Swagway’s Swagtron hoverboards, the T1 and T3, will start to hit shelves in June. Pre-orders are available now on BestBuy.com.

Swagway is one of the first hoverboard brands to apply the new government-mandated UL 2272 safety certification mark. That means the devices have passed a level of safety standards verified by UL, an independent safety science company.

Hoverboards were all the buzz last year, but there were reports of safety concerns, including reports of the gadgets starting on fire.

27 May: High-Tech Appliances Are Here to Help

We’ve all been there. You’re standing at the grocery store, wondering if you need milk. How about eggs? You don’t buy any, only to get home and realize you needed both.

If only you could have a way to check what’s in the fridge while you’re standing in the store aisle. Well, today’s technology-enabled appliances can help with just that.

Take the Samsung Family Hub refrigerator, for instance. It has three built-in cameras that give you an inside view when you open an app on your smartphone.

23 May: You Have a Fitness Tracker. Does Your Dog Need One, Too?

Pack on a few extra pounds over the winter? Chances are Fido did, too.

More than half of all dogs and cats in the United States are overweight, according to a recent survey by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP). Even more alarming, 28 percent of cats and 18 percent of dogs are now classified as clinically obese, meaning they are at least 30 percent above ideal weight.

This obesity epidemic is keeping our furry, four-legged friends from living longer, healthier, better lives.

This year, an estimated 3.3 million seniors will graduate from high school, and many will head to college come fall. Odds are pretty good that you’ll be making the rounds of grad parties with gift in hand sometime soon.

Americans spent nearly $4.8 billion on graduation gifts in 2015, with the average present costing $100 or more. No doubt you’ll want to give that special grad something he or she will appreciate and put to good use.

But what?

To help you, Best Buy went straight to the source, asking more than 500 high school grads what they want and what they’ll use these gifts for.

17 May: Here’s the Tech Couples Want This Wedding Season

We’re in wedding season, folks. An average of 2.4 million nuptial ceremonies are performed in the U.S. each year, with 44,230 taking place each weekend.

That’s a lot of vows, cake and chicken dances.

For many couples, it’s crunch time to knock out their to-dos before the “I Dos.” That means finalizing attendee lists, setting menus, communicating with vendors and filling out wedding registries.

When it comes to the registry, modern couples are ditching the candlesticks and china for blenders and cameras.

Last week, Aaron Neuhouser climbed the steep face of a Himalayan mountain for an incredible view — and he did so without ever taking his feet off the ground or leaving the United States.

You see, Aaron wasn’t actually on a mountain. He was virtually on a mountain.

Aaron was at the Best Buy store at Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota, where he had an opportunity to experience the highly anticipated Oculus Rift virtual reality headset for the first time.

09 May: It’s a Seller’s Market. Can Connected Home Technology Help You Cash In?

Connected home products, such as smart thermostats and security cameras, can help you simplify tasks, save money on your utility bills and make you feel safer and more comfortable.

And they might even help you sell your home faster.

According to a recent survey by Coldwell Banker Real Estate, nearly half of Americans either own smart home technology or plan to invest in it in 2016. So it’s no wonder many of the homeowners polled said they’re willing to pay extra to “smart stage” their homes before selling.

03 May: The One Thing Saving This Mom’s Sanity? Technology

Parenting books? Yoga? Coffee and a cozy blanket? They all sound great, but they’re not how I, as a mom of three, keep it together while trying to keep it all together.

In the marathon-and-sprint circuit of parenting, technology is the one thing saving my sanity amid a calendar packed with work, school, sports, volunteering, friend time and family time.

Hear me out. I know I’m blogging for a technology retailer, but I’m also a real mom with real stuff to juggle.
