25 Feb: Creating a space for young women to explore STEM

When Olivia Farley became coordinator of the Best Buy Teen Tech Center at Keystone Community Services this fall, she noticed something was missing: girls.

The center, located in St. Paul, Minnesota, is one of about 35 Teen Tech Center locations across the country. It opened in 2017 as a place where teens can explore their interests in all things tech, from coding and graphic design to filmmaking and everything in between.

Giving youth — especially girls — access to tech education opportunities is important to Best Buy.

25 Feb: Women are helping lead Best Buy’s tech transformation

Engineer. Scientist. Manager. Intern. Vice president. These are just a few of the many roles at the forefront of our tech transformation.

But to us, these leaders are better known as Linda, Naomi, Melissa, Faiza and Meghan.

While most of these women experienced being the first or only woman on a team at some point in their careers, they’re now helping drive change in the field of technology — through their groundbreaking technology work and a shared passion for mentoring young women interested in the field.

29 Jan: Video series showcases teens’ big dreams

Walter “Twinky” Springs was first inspired to pick up a camera when he saw his mom watering flowers. He wanted to capture the beauty he saw in that moment.

He was nervous when he first started exploring photography because he didn’t really know what he was doing. But that feeling changed when he met Adrian, a mentor at his local Best Buy Teen Tech Center in Denver.

“He just taught me everything he knew, and I had to take advantage of that,” Twinky said.

29 Jan: Using exploration, collaboration to develop future leaders

When an adult enters a Best Buy Teen Tech Center, it might feel unstructured, maybe even a bit chaotic. But that’s entirely by design.

No one provides specific assignments or instructions like in a standard classroom. Rather, the teens are free to engage with the latest technology, like drawing tablets, robots, 3D printers and even a state-of-the-art music production studio.

The result is powerful. Teen Tech Centers aren’t just places where teens can access tech, but rather they serve as a foundation for community and self-discovery.

16 Jan: Introducing the Inaugural Class of Best Buy Scholars

Every young person deserves an opportunity to pursue their dreams, but not everyone gets the same access to resources they need.

That’s why we created the Best Buy Scholars program, which provides college scholarships for diverse students.

Together with the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) and University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management, we are aiming to make a college degree more accessible for students, including those who were active participants at a Best Buy Teen Tech Center.

We are excited to welcome the first six scholars, each of whom will receive an internship and mentorship along with their scholarship.

30 Dec: A Look Back At Our Most Inspiring Stories Of 2020

The word of the year for 2020 was “unprecedented.” And, in fact, many of us are probably sick of that word and the realities of living in this unprecedented time.

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, we adjusted to life with face coverings, social distancing and virtual work, virtual school, virtual family gatherings — virtual everything, really. For many, it was a difficult year.

But through it all, we saw so much good in the world, even just in our little Best Buy corner of it.

30 Dec: Best Buy, community came together during record-breaking disaster season

Amanda Bergeron had been an assistant store manager just two weeks when Hurricane Laura struck the Gulf Coast in August, destroying her store in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

Several employees were displaced from their homes as the Category 4 storm knocked out power and much of the city’s water. The store was rebuilt from the ground up — an endeavor that took nearly two months.

Then, just weeks after the store’s grand reopening the first weekend of October, it was closed again in preparation for Hurricane Zeta.

14 Dec: Store welcomes 6-year-old as both shopper and ‘employee’

As soon as little Parker Buchholz could toddle around on his own, he’d scope out the back of his parents’ TV or fiddle with their DVDs. Fast-forward a few years and the boy’s fascination with electronics has grown right along with him.

Now Parker is 6 years old and one of his favorite places is, you guessed it, Best Buy. And when he and his family walk into the store in Fort Wayne, Indiana, his inner expert comes out.

“He names every TV and talks about how big they are, along with the USB and auxiliary ports — things a typical 6-year-old wouldn’t know,” said his mom, Erika.

03 Dec: Employees save the day after woman returned wrong laptop

The customer was in tears when she first called the Best Buy customer service number.

She had traded in a laptop at her local store in San Diego, only to realize a month later that she had handed over the wrong device — one her grandma had given her as a gift. She was devastated.

The woman returned to the store, but the laptop was no longer there. So, she called Best Buy’s corporate office in a last-ditch effort to find it.
