02 Feb: To Avoid TV Tip-Overs, Follow These 5 Safety Steps

More than 100 million people will turn on their televisions Sunday to watch the big football game.

As you’re gearing up to join them, we want to help keep your home safe from a potential danger: TV tip-overs.

A child visits an emergency room every 45 minutes because of an injury from a television tipping over, according to a U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission report.

Here are five things to know about preventing TV tip-over accidents:

  • It’s all about the stand.

01 Feb: Best Buy’s recycling program is changing. Here’s how and why.

This week we introduced changes in our in-store recycling program that allow us to continue to provide this service for our customers.

We are now charging customers $25 for each TV and computer monitor they recycle at our stores. And in two states – Illinois and Pennsylvania – we are no longer recycling these particular products because of laws that prevent us from collecting fees to help run our program. All other products – such as batteries, ink cartridges, computers, printers and hundreds of other items –   continue to be recycled for free at all of our stores.

07 Jan: Look Who’s Talking Sustainable Solutions at CES

Thousands of techies from around the world have been drooling over drones and swooning over self-driving cars since CES 2016 kicked off in Las Vegas earlier this week.

But for Best Buy, the conversations will go beyond the latest and greatest consumer electronics. We’ll also be at CES to explore the less-visible sides of tech innovation: finding sustainable solutions for our business and our customers.

On Jan. 8, Laura Bishop, vice president of Public Affairs & Sustainability at Best Buy, will sit on a panel to discuss the opportunities the entire industry faces as we aspire to be responsible manufacturers and retailers.

21 Dec: Five Takeaways from the Global Climate Conference

Laura Bishop spoke to educators from Climate Generation at COP21 about the role of business in climate change.

Just two weeks ago, 187 countries gathered in Paris and unanimously agreed to reduce their carbon emissions to confront climate change. I witnessed this historic achievement and returned home both energized and hopeful. Here’s why:

Our world is united.

This remarkable agreement resulted from the public and private sectors working together to forge a global pact to keep global warming well below 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit), with a target of below 1.5 C (2.7 F).

10 Dec: Doing Business, The Right Way: Best Buy Works for Human Rights

Today, Best Buy released a new Human Rights Corporate Statement, strengthening our commitment to respect the rights of those who work for and shop at Best Buy. We chose to release a new statement today as it is Human Rights Day, which commemorates the day the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

At Best Buy, doing business the right way means we understand how our operations affect our employees and our customers, and that we are committed to addressing any adverse impacts we may encounter.

16 Nov: Perfect Marks For Carbon Efforts! We’re Hanging This Award on the Fridge

I’m especially proud to work at Best Buy because today we join an elite group of S&P 500 companies recognized by CDP for leadership in carbon reduction and disclosure.

CDP released its S&P 500 Annual Report, including the Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index, in which Best Buy received the maximum score of 100. Adding to our “A” designation for our carbon reduction program, Best Buy achieved a perfect score.

The report also features Best Buy as a leader in the retail sector, including this comment from Public Affairs & Sustainability Vice President Laura Bishop: “Best Buy is committed to sustaining our planet and our communities.

09 Nov: Best Buy Employees Assemble 5,000 Care Packages for Deployed Military Members

Nearly 500 Best Buy employees came out in full force last Friday to fill more than 5,000 individual care packages for military men and women deployed overseas. Forty-three active members of the 133rd Airlift Wing, a unit of the Minnesota Air National Guard, also participated.

The packages contain everything from snacks to Bluetooth speakers to letters and drawings from kids, all donated by Best Buy employees during October. The company donated some items, too, such as Insignia headphones and portable battery chargers.

04 Nov: Best Buy Achieves Coveted CDP Climate Change A List

Best Buy has been awarded a prized position on the CDP Climate A List for our efforts to reduce carbon emissions in the past year.

The commendation puts Best Buy in the top 5 percent of thousands of companies that submit annual emissions data and climate management strategies to CDP (formerly Carbon Disclosure Project).

We are in good company. Other corporate “A Listers” now include sustainability powerhouses and partners such as Apple, Google, LG, Microsoft, Samsung, Sony and Sprint.

The A List designation comes shortly after Best Buy set a new goal to reduce carbon emissions by 45 percent by 2020 and signed the American Business Act Pledge on Climate Change.

27 Oct: Saving Trees One Box at a Time

Last year, Best Buy shipped more than 12 million packages to customers. That’s a lot of shipping boxes.

The cardboard we use is FSC-certified, meaning it comes from responsibly managed forests, but now we are using less of it. We recently “right-sized” our shipping boxes, which will save more than 440 tons of cardboard a year.

That means our customers are receiving packaging that is less wasteful. Our employees are experiencing a faster and easier packaging process. The company is seeing a reduction in costs associated with materials and labor.

19 Oct: Our Renewed Commitment to Act on Climate Change

Today we are proud that Best Buy is joining other leading U.S. companies in signing the American Business Act Pledge on Climate Change.

This is an historic moment for Best Buy. In our pledge, we committed to further advancing our efforts toward addressing this global challenge. Here’s what we said:

  • We will reduce our own carbon emissions by 45 percent by 2020 from operational reductions and renewable sourcing. This science-based goal builds on our 2014 achievement of a 26 percent reduction in carbon emissions within our operations.

01 Oct: 5 Easy Ways to Save Energy at Home

We’re celebrating Energy Awareness Month here at Best Buy. Not only is saving energy good for the environment, it’s also good for your pocketbook. Here are five small things you can do to save energy and money in your home:

  1. Change your lightbulbs to LED. They last longer (20 years!) and use up to 85 percent less energy than a standard incandescent bulb.
  2. Replace that old fridge with an ENERGY STAR® certified one. You’ll be surprised how much energy you can save.
