Sustainability
Sustainability has been at the core of what we do at Best Buy for decades, and now we’re making our biggest commitment yet to positively impact the planet.
Today, we announced we have signed The Climate Pledge, a commitment to be carbon neutral across our business by 2040 — a decade faster than our previous goal of 2050.
The Climate Pledge was co-founded by Amazon and Global Optimism in 2019 to mobilize companies across multiple business sectors to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, 10 years ahead of the United Nations’ Paris Agreement on Climate Change.
Bees are an essential part of our food supply, pollinating more than one-third of the world’s crops. And Best Buy is committed to playing a small role in helping them thrive.
For the past three years, we have partnered with groups in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area to sponsor two beehives, each buzzing with about 70,000 honeybees.
The hives are part of Best Buy’s broader efforts to positively impact the world.
“Sponsoring these beehives is a great example of how we partner with others in the community to promote environmental sustainability,” said Tim Dunn, Best Buy’s head of environmental sustainability.
In the early weeks of the pandemic, consumers were stunned to find empty shelves in the toilet paper aisle.
In response, a growing number of Americans turned to the bidet, finally giving it the attention it deserves. While this handy bathroom accessory has been around for more than 300 years and are popular in other parts of the world, it never really caught on in the U.S.
While toilet paper is back on store shelves, bidets remain as relevant as ever because they’re easy to use and better for the environment.
Best Buy has cut our carbon footprint in half since 2009, and now we’re making our biggest commitment yet to renewable energy.
In collaboration with solar developer X-Elio and U.S. Bank, we are proud to unveil the Best Buy Solar Field in Martin, South Carolina. This project will produce 174,000 megawatt hours of clean electricity per year for the local power grid — enough to power the equivalent of 260 Best Buy stores for an entire year.
The Best Buy Solar Field underscores our commitment to enriching lives through technology.
Best Buy is proud to rank No. 46 on the 2020 list of the 100 Best Corporate Citizens, moving up 21 spots from last year.
This list recognizes outstanding environmental, social and governance (ESG) transparency and performance among the 1,000 largest public companies in the U.S. Our ranking places us in the top 5% of all companies evaluated, and we ranked second in the retail category.
ISS ESG, the responsible investing research arm of Institutional Shareholder Services, compiled the list.
At Best Buy, we’re committed to offering products that help our customers reduce their carbon footprints while saving money on their utility bills.
For the average household, more than half of the energy used is for heating and cooling1. A great way to control, monitor and reduce energy used at home is by installing a smart thermostat.
To help our customers save energy and money, we’re partnering with Google to offer deals on Nest smart thermostats this month.
From now through May 31:

Back in 2007, Melissa Freidus was bothered by how quickly trash cans around her Best Buy store in Gainesville, Georgia, were filling up with soda bottles.
One day, the solution to her garbage woes walked right through the store’s front door: a man wearing a City of Gainesville sanitation jacket.
Melissa told him she was interested in recycling and asked if he knew how she could get started. She found the right person, he told her, because he was the superintendent of solid waste for the city.
Best Buy is a big company, which means we have an even bigger responsibility to take care of the environment and use resources responsibly.
We are committed to creating a thriving business while protecting the planet, conserving natural resources and preventing pollution. We do this through reducing our carbon footprint, building out a circular economy and helping our customers live more sustainably.
“We aim to keep our customers and their communities at the forefront of our decision making,” said Hugh Cherne, Associate Director of Environmental Sustainability at Best Buy.
