How2Recycle® label program to help Best Buy customers with package disposal

Best Buy’s sustainability efforts continue to evolve as we work to reduce our impact on the environment. From leading the charge in recycling e-waste to reducing our carbon emissions, we want to do more for the planet — and help our customers do the same.

As part of that, we’re partnering with How2Recycle®, a standardized labeling system that provides transparent on-package disposal instructions. Because recycling programs vary by region, it’s sometimes hard to know if your recyclables end up in the right place. The How2Recycle program is on a mission to get more materials in the recycling bin by taking the guesswork out of recycling.

“We’re always looking for new ways to reduce our impact on the environment and that includes improving our packaging offerings,” said Tim Dunn, Best Buy’s head of environmental sustainability. “The partnership with How2Recycle makes it easy for customers to determine packaging recyclability and increase the likelihood of those materials being recycled and repurposed into something new.”

Customers will first see the labels on packaging for small accessories like iPhone cases, chargers and watch bands. We hope to expand it to additional packaging in the future.

Less impact through sustainable packaging

We look at many different parts of our business to find ways to improve our environmental footprint, and how we package products is one of them. We joined the Sustainable Packaging Coalition, a nonprofit working to drive meaningful action toward packaging sustainability throughout the value chain.

We’ve also made changes to the outer box packaging of some of our Insignia brand TVs, both in the U.S. and Canada. The packaging is made with sustainably sourced paper that is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), which ensures that it comes from responsibly managed forests that provide environmental, social and economic benefits to help protect the planet.

Additionally, we are committed to reducing carbon emissions for our business and customers. By 2040, we have a goal to be carbon neutral across our operations and another goal to reduce carbon emissions for our customers by 20% by 2030. By working with our customers, we can make a stronger environmental impact for generations to come.
