We aim to meaningfully reduce our impact on the environment and help our customers do the same. By making decisions with the future in mind, we can help save our planet for future generations.
That’s why we’ve set aggressive goals to reduce our carbon emissions 75% by 2030 and achieve net zero emissions by 2040. To help achieve these goals, we’ve invested in solar projects across the country, including California, South Carolina and Texas, and have already cut carbon emissions in our operations by 61% since 2009.
The use of renewable energy, including solar, is all part of our broader goal to support the transition to a circular economy. The circular economy is a system in which nothing is wasted and we keep products in use for as long as possible.
“We made a pledge to help make a difference in our communities and the environment,” said Tim Dunn, Best Buy’s head of environmental sustainability. “We’re proud to invest in projects that will continue to help reduce our carbon emissions across our operations because our employees and customers expect it, and the planet demands it.”
Here’s a look at our solar projects so far.
- Best Buy Solar Field (Martin, SC) – This collaboration with U.S. Bank and solar developer X-Elio will produce 174,000 megawatts of electricity, which is enough to power the equivalent of 260 Best Buy stores for a year.
- Little Bear Solar Project (Fresno County, CA) – Our second project has almost three times the power of our solar field in South Carolina. Turning out 480,000 megawatt hours of electricity, this grid produces enough energy to power the equivalent of 715 stores.
- Big Star Solar project (Bastrop County, TX) – Currently being developed with hopes of generating power by 2022. Best buy has partnered with Constellation, a leading energy company on this solar project. Set to produce 46,845 megawatts, this solar field will power the equivalent 57 stores and a 600,000-square-foot distribution center.
- Prospero 2 Best Buy Solar (Andrews County, TX) – Our latest solar project will create 331 megawatts of power. Our portion of the project will offset the carbon impact of the equivalent of 300 Best Buy stores, approximately 30% of our U.S. store portfolio, for 10 years.
Helping our customers live more sustainably
In addition to reducing our own carbon footprint, we’ve also set a goal to help our customers reduce their own carbon footprints by 20% by 2030. With ENERGY STAR products, we will save customers $5 billion on their energy bills. This year, we were named ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year for the eighth year in a row.
Together, with our customers and employees, we aim to make a difference in our communities and create a lasting, positive impact on the planet.
