06 Apr: Over 25 years, Best Buy career has provided her more than a paycheck

As Vicki Brown, home services senior manager, reflects on 25 years and counting with Best Buy, one word stands out to sum up her experience: possibilities.

In 1994, Vicki found herself making a career pivot. After years of living in the Bahamas and running a small hotel, she and her husband decided they wanted their children to attend school in the U.S.

So, Vicki took the plunge and moved with her three children to Florida, while her husband remained in the Bahamas to manage the hotel.

Black History Month is a time to reflect on the significant contributions and achievements Black Americans have made — and continue to make — to our country, our communities and our company.

At Best Buy, we know that diversity matters year-round. That’s why we aim to build teams that reflect our communities across all parts of our business, including our stores, distribution centers and the corporate office.

This month, we’re highlighting three dynamic Black leaders who are helping drive Best Buy forward.

30 Sep: Holiday Workers Find Careers In Best Buy Distribution Centers

Jiggy Oliva was seeking a place to work for a few months during the 2018 holiday season. He got a job at Best Buy and never left.

He started as a seasonal employee at our distribution center in Compton, California, where his brother, Cesar Cervantes, had started working during the previous holiday season. Jiggy landed a permanent part-time role the following January and is now talking about moving into a full-time role.

“I was just looking to make a little money on the side for the holidays,” he said.

Desiray Perez started as a seasonal worker at our Best Buy regional distribution center in Dinuba, California, when she was 18 years old. Now, she’s entering her seventh holiday season — her first as the facility’s inventory control coordinator.

She worked part-time at the center for about five years while going to school and caring for her young son. She’s been full-time for about a year now and was recently promoted to the coordinator role. Her goal is to become a manager.

22 Feb: Tech Center Teens Get Career Advice From Best Buy

When it comes to applying for a first job — or any job for that matter — many people stress over writing their resume and preparing for the interview process.

Best Buy recently helped 25 students from the Best Buy Teen Tech Center at Little Black Pearl in Chicago learn how to turn that stress into success during a company-sponsored career workshop.

The goal: to give the students pointers on professionalism and how to stand out as a job candidate.

“It was amazing to see the “ah-ha” moments when they learned to look at things differently” said Frank Barciak, a human resource manager for Best Buy Mobile.
