20 Dec: Record number of Best Buy employees run in the St. Jude Memphis Marathon Weekend

David Garcia felt a piercing pain in his left knee at mile 3 of the St. Jude Memphis Marathon Weekend last Saturday. But he kept going, determined to finish the full 26.2 miles with the support of his family and Team Best Buy. 

“I rounded the corner, and there’s the Best Buy team cheering me on,” said David, vice president of retail operations and profit protection. “It made me happy to see them.” 

He was one of a record 18 members of Team Best Buy who showed up in Tennessee’s second-biggest city with two goals in mind: to fundraise and finish.

Treatments invented at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital have helped push the childhood cancer survival rate from 20% to more than 80% since the hospital opened nearly 60 years ago. That astounding fact is just one of the many reasons Best Buy is welcoming back the Thanks and Giving® campaign this year.

The annual holiday campaign returns to Best Buy on Oct. 10, and we’re asking our employees and customers to come together to support children with cancer and other life-threatening diseases.

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed many aspects of our lives, but one thing that hasn’t changed is the commitment our employees and customers have shown to help St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® in its mission to treat the toughest childhood cancers and pediatric diseases.

This year, we raised more than $22.4 million in stores and online during the holiday season, making Best Buy the largest corporate donor ever for the annual St. Jude Thanks and Giving® campaign. That’s on the heels of a record-breaking campaign last year, when we collected more than $22.5 million in donations — the most money brought in by a single partner in a given year.

The anticipation of visiting a hospital for sick children can stir a range of emotions. Best Buy General Manager Derek Muller expected a heartbreaking experience of seeing kids fighting cancer and other diseases. Instead, on a tour of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital ® in Memphis, he saw hope.

This past holiday, Mary Collett’s Best Buy mobile store in Odessa, Texas, was a company-wide leader in contributing to the St. Jude Thanks and Giving® campaign.

On Wednesday, she got to see first-hand all the good that money can do at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®.
