What 5G mobile means for you

The 5G mobile network is one of the most-talked about topics in tech news these days. But what is it, and what does it mean for you?

It can be hard to keep up with the buzz, so we talked with Best Buy’s mobile experts to get the latest. Here’s a breakdown of what you need to know about 5G and how it will affect your mobile devices.

What is 5G?

5G is the latest generation of wireless technology. It’s a new kind of network that has greater speeds and responsiveness compared with its predecessor, 4G. The new mobile network is also expected to create a lot of innovation in the tech world, including the ability to have a translated conversation in real time with someone across the globe. Because of its fast speeds and new capabilities, it could ultimately change the way we live, work and play.

Is it really that fast?

The 5G mobile network is designed to carry your data up to 10 times faster than 4G. That means you’ll be able to download your favorite HD movies in just seconds (without any buffer). Web browsing will be instant, and the superfast speed allows for lag-free, high-quality streaming of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) experiences.

Can it handle a crowd?

The new 5G network will be able to handle a large number of users, devices and traffic demands at the same time. That means no more network slowdowns at the stadium, fewer communication problems in dense cities or during peak usage times.

Will my current phone work on the new network?

Likely, no. Your phone will need to be 5G compatible to take advantage of what the new network has to offer. The good news is, the devices are starting to come out already. (Samsung’s first 5G compatible phone, the Galaxy 10 5G, is available now at Best Buy.) And of course, 5G phones will run on 4G networks.

When will I get 5G?

Major mobile carriers are building their 5G networks quickly and will be introducing them in certain cities this year. More extensive rollouts are planned in 2020. Not sure if your carrier has 5G where you live? Check with an expert Blue Shirt at your local Best Buy store.
