Two Best Buy executives recently returned to their alma maters to deliver the commencement addresses to the 2017 class of college graduates.

Shari Ballard, the company’s president of multichannel retail, spoke at the University of Michigan-Flint on April 30. And Chief Financial Officer Corie Barry spoke at the College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph, Minnesota, on May 13.

Anthony Sanchez, a high school sophomore, always dreamed of producing music with his friends. Now, thanks to Best Buy and Sony, he’ll be able to make music and much more.

The Best Buy Teen Tech Center presented by Sony officially opened on Monday, May 15. It has all the technology Anthony needs to feed his creativity while paving the way for college and a career. The center, housed at the San Marcos Boys & Girls Club about 35 miles outside of San Diego, is equipped with new computers, cameras and, yes, a recording studio.

Frank Regalado was wandering through his local Best Buy in San Antonio on a recent afternoon when a bright blue door in the center of the store caught his eye.

It was an interactive display with smart home products, including a smart lock, doorbell, cameras and thermostat. Intrigued, he tried all the gadgets. Then he worked with a smart home expert to design a system that was right for him. It was an unexpected purchase, but a valuable one.

“I’ve been wanting to add a security system at my house,” he said.

01 May: Best Buy Adds 4 Teen Tech Centers in Minnesota

Best Buy is growing its network of after-school tech programs for teens by adding four new locations in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota.

That makes for 15 Best Buy Teen Tech Centers across the United States. The free centers are open year-round and give underserved teens hands-on access to the latest technology.

The new Minnesota Teen Tech Centers are located at:

  • Brian Coyle Center (Minneapolis)
  • Hope Community (Minneapolis)
  • Keystone Community Services (St. Paul)
  • YMCA (Downtown St. Paul)

They join the existing Teen Tech Center at the Minneapolis Central Library, which has been operating since January 2013.

On Saturday, millions of people around the world will celebrate Earth Day, bringing added awareness to efforts to protect our planet. But that’s a year-round focus for Laura Bishop, Best Buy’s chief corporate responsibility and sustainability officer, and her team.

Laura joined Best Buy in 2003 to help launch the company’s government relations team, a role in which she helped shape environmental recycling laws across the country. She has led the company’s sustainability efforts for the past three-and-a-half years and recently was promoted to her current role.

20 Apr: Geek Squad Academy kicks off 11th season of summer camps for teens

Summer’s right around the corner, and Geek Squad Academy (GSA) is kicking off its most exciting season yet.

The tech-education program is marking its 11th year by holding 40 camps nationwide (a 30 percent increase over last year). That means more than 8,500 teens will learn how to use essential tech tools — and have fun doing so.

GSA has served more than 26,000 teens since it began through free, two-day camps led by Geek Squad Agents and community partners.

18 Apr: Best Buy Community Grants Program Seeks Local Nonprofits Serving Teens

Best Buy is committed to providing underserved youth access to tech education and the tools necessary to be successful in their future careers. Part of this commitment includes funding local nonprofit organizations focused on after-school tech education. We are looking for organizations with a proven track record, and offering hands-on activities, to apply for our Community Grants program.

Nonprofits can take our eligibility quiz now and prepare to apply to the Best Buy Community Grants program. The program will award a total of up to $2 million to organizations across the country.
