27 Apr: Three more Best Buy facilities earn TRUE certification for zero waste

We’re proud to share that three supply chain facilities — two in California and one in Washington — have earned TRUE certification for zero waste. That means each building diverts more than 90% of its waste from landfills, getting us one step closer to making a positive, lasting impact on the planet.

These distribution centers are joining our Reverse Logistics Center in Chino, California, which was Best Buy’s first facility to receive TRUE certification last year, each with goals of supporting supply chain waste reduction.

chino zero waste green team

31 Mar: Journey to zero waste: how our California facility earned TRUE certification

Our Reverse Logistics Center in Chino, California, has a saying: Sometimes it’s okay to talk trash.

This philosophy embodies the workplace culture the center has built around making sustainability a priority. They even have a “Green Team,” a group of volunteers committed to leading the facility in sustainable waste initiatives.

And last year, the building became TRUE certified for zero waste, diverting more than 99.67% of its solid waste from landfills.

TRUE (Total Resource Use and Efficiency) certification helps facilities define, pursue and achieve zero waste goals.

Recyclable-gift-cards

01 Feb: One employee’s idea keeps 200 tons of plastic from landfills

With his retirement around the corner, Tim Nickel, didn’t think his legacy after 15 years at Best Buy would be gift cards. But then again, he didn’t know his idea would help keep more than 200 tons of plastic waste from landfills.

That idea was a recyclable paper gift card.

Tim, who’s our gift card production manager, is responsible for printing the cards and getting them on store shelves in the U.S. and Canada. In 2011, he learned just how many gift cards go to landfills and that each one takes around 500 years to break down.
