As many people struggled with how to remain socially connected during a time of social distancing, Phillip England found solace in the fictional worlds — and real-life connections — of online gaming.

For Phillip, a Geek Squad Agent in Arizona, that wasn’t a big change from his routine prior to COVID-19. The avid gamer would regularly conquer missions on Arma 3, a military game that led him to collaborate with players from around the world, many of whom he now calls friends.

After getting passed over in the 2019 NBA 2K League Draft, Justin doubled down. He practiced more, built a support network and changed his mindset. 

What a difference a year makes.

On Feb. 22, Wizards District Gaming picked Justin, 19, in the second round of the 2020 draft. He was one of 229 players vying for 68 open roster spots in the 21-team esports league.

Nintendo is taking Pokémon trainers on a new adventure.

The company just announced two new games for Nintendo Switch coming in late 2019: Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield.

The next adventure takes place in the new Galar region, where people and Pokémon live in a variety of environments — contemporary cities, vast plains and snowy mountains. Together, you and the Pokémon will explore the region, visit new gyms and challenge other eager trainers to claim victory.

Three new Pokémon are also available for trainers to select as their trusty partner as they venture out into the Galar region.

31 Oct: 600+ Best Buy Stores to Open Late for ‘Call of Duty: WWII’ Release

The next chapter in the Call of Duty series launches this week, and you can pick it up at Best Buy as soon as it’s released at midnight ET.

More than 600 U.S. Best Buy locations will be opening simultaneously at 12:01 a.m. ET on Friday, Nov. 3, so you can play Call of Duty: WWII all night long. That means 9:01 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 2, for those on West Coast; 10:01 p.m. for gamers on Mountain Time and 11:01 p.m.

09 Oct: Best Buy Qualifier Wins Nintendo World Championships

Besting 23 opponents in games of the past and present, Thomas “Ito” Gonda of California won the Nintendo World Championships over the weekend in New York City.

Thomas — a 21-year-old computer science student at San Diego State University — unseated defending champion John “Numbers” Goldberg during a best-of-three final series of Super Mario Odyssey on the Nintendo Switch console.

The victory ended his status as a lifelong runner-up, Thomas said.

The Nintendo World Championships, held Oct. 7, featured head-to-head competition on games like Mario Party 2 and Donkey Kong Country Returns.
