More than a toy: Donation keeps employee’s memory alive

After Abdallah Moukhtar died last September, his family needed to figure out what to do with his collection of Funko Pops! — all 1,100 of them.

So, his mom, Suzy Blakely Duhme, found an organization called Pops for Patients that donates Funko products to children’s hospitals. And when Rob Zeida, who started the local chapter, came to pick up the donation, they realized there was a deeper connection. Rob works at Best Buy — just like Abdallah had.

“If you’re working for Best Buy, you’re the person I was supposed to give these to,” Suzy told Rob.

We are inviting customers to donate at the registers in every Best Buy store, online at BestBuy.com and during in-home service visits.

Best Buy Joins New Partnership To Bring Tech, Internet To Minnesota Students

Best Buy is teaming up with other prominent Minnesota organizations to help fight the digital divide across the state.

We’re proud to be one of the leaders of the Partnership for a ConnectedMN, a public-private partnership announced by Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz on June 30. Through avenues like grantmaking, the partnership will support initiatives that help K-12 students from disinvested communities across the state of Minnesota get access to the computing devices and internet access they need to facilitate distance learning and access critical support services.

Face Painting On Hold, She Uses Windows To Draw Smiles

It’s not every day you meet a tech analyst who moonlights as a face painter but then again, you probably haven’t met Lynda Tysver.

She paints faces, in part, to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Her favorite part is what she calls the big reveal, when she holds the mirror up for a child she’s transformed into a butterfly or a dinosaur.

“It’s like Christmas morning,” said Lynda, who has been a contract worker for Best Buy in Minnesota for the past three years.

After Nashville Tornado, Best Buy Brings Support, Volunteers

Best Buy employees in the Nashville area are rallying to support the community after the deadly tornado that struck last week.

The company is donating money and sending teams of volunteers to help with the local response and recovery efforts.

“We see the customers who are in our stores every day all across Nashville who are trying to figure out next steps, and we’re hoping to just bring a little relief this week,” said Best Buy District Manager Kavin Johnson, who has lived in the area for 20 years.

Many hands make brighter holiday for NJ children in foster care [VIDEO]

It started with a simple idea: Brian and Stephanie Farrell wanted to donate toys to foster children for the holidays.

When Brian, a district manager for Best Buy in New Jersey, told his store managers what he was doing, they asked to help and rallied their employees.

Word spread and, within weeks, all the stores in the state joined together to collect gifts. The donations were delivered to Embrella, a nonprofit that provides resources to foster families throughout New Jersey.

“It’s not really a group of employees — it’s a family donating to other families,” Brian said.

Best Buy sets sights on raising $100 million for St. Jude

Imagine the stress and uncertainty of watching a loved one go through cancer treatment. The last thing you should worry about is finances. That’s why families at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® never receive a bill for treatment, travel, housing or food. And it’s just one of the many reasons why Best Buy partners with St. Jude during the holiday season.

St. Jude has treated children from all 50 states and around the world, and the hospital freely shares its discoveries with doctors and scientists worldwide to help save thousands more children.

What did they do this summer? Learned career skills

When the summer started, Teri Jones and Ted Ritts were shy. Super shy, they’d say.

But an internship — organizing a community block party for Level Up Studios, a nonprofit creative arts center in northeast Pittsburgh — would help with that. Over the summer, the pair would need to line up sponsors, ask for donations, schedule food and entertainment, and navigate the city permitting process. That meant talking to strangers, being persuasive and, on occasion, getting comfortable being told “no.”

Best Buy teammates, a cancer survivor and a trip to St. Jude

Christian Crawford and Denton Olson are sales consultants at Best Buy who took a journey to the place that saved Denton’s life. The teammates at the Best Buy store in Columbia, Missouri, traveled to Memphis to visit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® as participants in a health study looking at long-term effects of cancer treatment.

Denton is alive and healthy thanks to breakthroughs discovered by scientists and doctors at St. Jude — work that continues every day because of generous donations, including those made at Best Buy during our St.

Best Buy Helping Employees, Communities Affected by California Wildfires

Like the rest of the country, we are deeply saddened by the impact the deadly wildfires have had on our employees, customers and communities in California. Our thoughts are with all those who have been affected.

Thankfully, all our employees in the affected areas have been accounted for. However, at least seven of them have lost their homes, and many more remain under mandatory evacuation orders.

The store in Chico closed for two-and-a-half days during the fire to accommodate employees who were dealing with evacuations and ensure their safety amid extremely poor air quality.

Government leaders laud Best Buy for supporting employees after Hurricane Florence

WILMINGTON, NORTH CAROLINA — When Hurricane Florence hit the North Carolina coast on Sept. 13, our Best Buy stores in Wilmington and Morehead City sustained significant water damage. Both remain closed.

How Best Buy has responded since then — continuing to pay employees who are doing volunteer work in the community — has gotten the attention of lawmakers and officials in Washington, D.C., who recently requested a visit to learn more.

On Monday, a group of national and local government officials visited the Wilmington Best Buy store to meet with employees.
